Philip Tufano, Chief, FDNY

Chief Phil Tufano

September 11, 1965-March 25, 2023

Although Phil was not a Marine, he embodied the Marine Corps spirit more than many Marines we know. His life was dedicated to service to his city and country. We are proud to call Phil one of the Old Breed. His obituary follows.

Philip “Phil” Tufano, 57, beloved husband of Irene Tufano, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, March 25, 2023.

Born in Flushing NY, he was a son of the late Neil and Patricia Tufano.

Phil was appointed with the FDNY in October 1993, and was assigned straight out of Proby School to Ladder 154 in January 1994, and served during the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center. In December 2002, he was promoted to Lieutenant and in December 2004, Phil was assigned to Ladder 143. He was promoted to Captain in June 2007, and was assigned to Engine 207. In 2014, Phil was promoted to Battalion Chief, assigned to Battalion 4, and finished up his career as a Rescue Ops Training Officer. He retired with 25 years of distinguished service, but even after Phil “hung up his hat”, he still remembered and prayed for the 343 friends that he lost in 9/11.

Not only a firefighter, but Phil was also a natural athlete. He was on both the FDNY Rugby and Football teams. He served as an announcer for the boxing team for many years as well. After moving to Greenville, he continued being a sports enthusiast by announcing for local kick boxing events and supporting and loving the Swamp Rabbits Ice Hockey team.

Phil was larger than life and his loss will be felt by all whose lives he impacted.

In addition to his loving wife, his memory will be forever cherished in the hearts of his son, Jake Durrell Tufano; his brothers, Frank Tufano and wife, Doreen, Neil Tufano and wife, Maryann, and Christopher “Chris” Tufano and wife, Mary; and many close friends.
